Resonance and six Gates hold Aetherion together. Five Gates are known; the sixth has been hidden. Two kinds of mystery run through the setting: the forces that sustain the world, and the incomplete accounts its inhabitants have inherited about those forces.
Matter, memory, faith and power are connected here. Understanding that relationship means paying attention both to what a civilization believes and to what its explanation leaves unresolved.
The force beneath an explanation.
Resonance binds matter, memory, faith and divine power. It is older than the doctrines through which civilizations understand it. A force can shape the world long before anyone has a complete account of how it works.
A belief can shape a civilization without explaining everything that sustains it. As loyalties and explanations compete, the reader has reason to question the first account they encounter - and to ask what each account makes possible for the people who believe it.
Six foundations. Partial knowledge.
The Gates are Aetherion’s foundations. Fire & Light is associated with Auralith, the Solar Wyrm bound to Eryndor and remembered through the Nine Flames. Water & Shadow is associated with Thal’gor, the Abyssal Leviathan bound to Vhalis and remembered through the Twelve Below.
These two traditions offer points of orientation: a force, a place, an ancient power and a way of remembering it. The hidden sixth Gate raises a different question. What can a civilization understand about its world when part of that world’s foundation has been concealed?
What survives a civilization’s account?
Places and powers can carry what civilizations forget. Those who touch the world’s underlying architecture can reshape more than their own lives. Memory is therefore a source of pressure in the present: what has been forgotten may still have the power to change the people who forgot it.
The cycle moves from the visible age, through competing explanations, toward the return of a buried age. Its scale grows through discovery. A story accepted as history, doctrine or myth can take on a different meaning when something older demands an answer.
