The promise

Commitment is a human act before it is a legal category.

The book begins by separating the relationship people intend to build from the default bundle of legal consequences that may attach to it. Covenant asks what two people are actually promising each other, and which parts of that promise belong to love, ethics, faith or private agreement.

Legal status is powerful precisely because it is not only symbolic.

State-recognized marriage can alter property, support, inheritance, tax, medical and dissolution rules. The Sovereign Union asks the reader to see those consequences clearly rather than treating them as invisible background to the emotional decision.
